10. A Rhino on Rhino Day
      October 12, 2018

On Saturday, September 22nd, the official date for International Rhino Day, we got invited to a late afternoon "game drive" which involved driving along the backroads of the game reserves surrounding the Wildlife College Campus. It was a beautiful evening for a drive through the bush, and, we figured any wildlife we might see would be a bonus.

After encountering several elephants, impala, kudu, warthogs, and a giraffe covered in oxpeckers (a bird that has some qualities of a mutualist, some of a parasite), we headed to our driver’s favorite spot to watch the sunset and encountered this . . . no need for captions, I think the videos and pictures say it all:

On the way home in the dark, we were treated to more spectacles, the highlight being the eye-shine of bushbabies as they leapt from one tree to another. Sorry, no pics or videos, but if you want to get a sense for what that was like, simply picture laser-pointer lights moving in quick graceful lines from tree-to-tree.

Not bad for International Rhino Day.
