Community Awareness of Sea Turtles
Submission by Nevena Teodosic, FPU class of 2015.

Image Isla Mujeres in the State of Quintana Roo, Mexico is home to a community where sea turtle conservation is becoming a topic of daily conversation. Mexico is one of only a few countries that has laws against harming sea turtles or their eggs in any way - critical regulations since sea turtle extinction may be approaching faster than expected. The ethnographic study I conducted over a six week period was the first of many steps to increase awareness in the community about sea turtles. In particular, my study stressed the importance of beaches like those on Isla Mujeres where mating and nesting take place. Fortunately, other students continue to attend the field school and conduct studies on how the island community can further its efforts towards education about sea turtle conservation.
